Research
The Department of Intercultural Glottopedagogy conducts research in the fields of foreign language teaching, intercultural communication, intercultural and interlanguage pragmatics, teaching languages for special purposes and intercultural teaching. These complex research fields share a number of common points and, as such, they require an interdisciplinary approach to the research process.

The department has its own character, a defined scope of activity and research objectives. The term glottopedagogy is connected with the well-established and widely recognized term glottodidactics. The proposed new definition of the discipline results from the need to develop an intercultural approach to language teaching and increasing the role of pedagogy in formulating new aims and contents of teaching. The research area of intercultural pedagogy in the department is broadly defined.

The research output of the department is based on linguistic, psychological and psycholinguistic theories. Due to the close relations between glottopedagogy and several related branches of academia – above all linguistics and general didactics – the department conducts research into modern approaches, methods and techniques of teaching and learning, taking into account the guidelines included in the language policy of the European Council.

Another major priority in contemporary language teaching is intercultural pedagogy, fostering easy adaptation to living in a multilingual and multicultural Europe. This aim includes not only mastering a foreign, or second language for communication in selected situations, but also developing a positive attitude towards other nationalities, relying on knowledge of the culture, customs and mentality of its members.

Our multifaceted attitude to research is reflected in our publications dealing with the following aspects, among others:
•     teaching and learning of German and English
•     language andragogy,
•     teaching German and English as a foreign language (GFL and EFL respectively),
•     methodology of teaching GFL and EFL for special purposes, especially the language of tourism and service encounters,
•     intercultural communication and related competences, language awareness
•     development and integration of language skills, especially listening and speaking skills,
•     development of pragmatic competence in a foreign language,
•     new media in language teaching (e-Tandem, podcasts, audiobooks),
•     GFL and EFL material development and evaluation,
•     evaluation and self-evaluation in teaching and learning languages, including the European Language Portfolio in professional education,
•     classroom discourse,
•     didactics ofintercultural encounters,
•     qualitative and quantitative research methods in applied linguistics,
•     GFL and EFL teacher training,
•     sociocultural context of teaching English as an international language.

International cooperation:
The department cooperates on a regular basis with several European universities, e.g. Marburg (Germany),  Darmstadt (Germany), Frankfurt am Oder (Germany), Malaga (Spain), Granada (Spain), La Corunna (Spain), Perugia (Italy) and Kosice (Slovakia).
