Department of Studies on Multilingualism

Research themes:
The research interests of the department include the following topics: multilingualism in naturalistic settings, multilingualism in a school setting and in the case of immersion. The research focuses both on the individual and social aspects of multilingualism. Within the individual aspect of multilingualism the following problems are studied:
• linguistic competence of bilingual and multilingual speakers
• the impact of age on language development in multilingual individuals
• second language acquisition in preschool and early school children
• bilingual families
• third language teaching
• intercultural competence in foreign language teaching

Within the social aspect of multilingualism the research problems are the following:
• multilingual communication for special purposes
• harmonization of the European Law vs. multilingualism
• multilingualism and cultural diversity in Europe
• education and support for parents of multilingual children

International cooperation:
• 2008-2010 Languages in a Network of European Excellence, the 6th Framework Programme, coordinator: University in Bern, Switzerland

• 2010-2013 „Bilingual Kindergarten Gertraud Marien Ffo”, European University Viadrina Fund, Frankfurt (Oder)

• Since 2010 „IntercuItural learning in German as Foreign Language“, University in Wien

• 2011-2014 „Object omission by Polish and Ukrainian children”, Tromso University, Norway

• since 2013 „Europe is my School”, a project carried out together with the project Europa Macht Schule e.V.
